Msgr. Nicholas Amato

Father Nicholas Amato has served over 20 years as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and is a recent graduate of the Shalem Institute of Spirituality in the Directing Contemplative Prayer Groups and Retreats Program. He has done three-month sabbaticals in Rome, in Israel, and at Mepkin (Trappist) Abbey. His full-time ministry includes directing contemplative retreats, preaching parish missions, and offering days of recollection. He has Masters degrees in Counseling and Theology, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration.

Rev. Matthew Buening Rev. Matthew Buening: Was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 2003 and currently serves as the pastoral administrator for St. Paul's in historic Ellicott City. He completed his undergraduate work and minor seminary at the University of Scranton and then finished a License in Fundamental Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.  
Thomas Butler Thomas Butler currently serves as the Director of Mission Services for the Bon Secours Health System in Marriottsville, Maryland. His background in Spiritual Direction, Theology, Ministry and Education afforded Tom a unique opportunity to study thoroughly and immerse himself in the spirituality of St. Vincent de Paul. It is from this experience he shares our weekend retreat.  
Joanne Cahoon Joanne has been a teacher, a youth and campus minister; a consultant, a writer, a staff member of a grad school, a spiritual director, a facilitator of retreats, and a professional coach. She has been involved in ministry in parish, school, and diocesan settings. Of particular interest to Joanne is the accompaniment of others on their journey; filled with struggle and joy, ambiguity and clarity, death and resurrection.  
Fr. Rob Carbonneau, C.P., Ph.D Fr. Rob Carbonneau, C.P., Ph.D: Historian and Director of the Passionist Historical Archives. He received a Ph.D. in American/East Asian History from Georgetown (1992) and has traveled to China six times since 1989. From 2007-2008 he taught at Sichuan International Studies University, Chongqing, China. Over these years he has met local Chinese Catholic Church leaders and has published numerous articles on American Catholic missionary history and its present day implications for world Catholicism.  
Joseph Chamberlin Joseph Chamberlin: An educator group facilitator with more than 25 years of experience. He has designed and facilitated meetings and workshops on topics from strategic planning to conflict management. The organizations and groups he has worked with range from catholic relief services to small group business owners. While an employee of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, he designed to be Church, a fifteen week small group experience to help individuals discern their call, identify their gifts, and determine how they could best use their gifts to minister in their community.

Bill Coffin Bill Coffin is the Executive Director of a small nonprofit –IDEALS—the Institute for the Developmental of Emotional and Life Skills. From 2002 – 2010 he was the Special Assistant for Marriage Education at the Administration for Children and Families in HHS. Bill spent most of the previous 3 decades working for the Navy, initially on active duty and then as a civilian in the Navy’s Family Support Program Headquarters in DC. His passion is marriage education and enrichment. Bill has served as the Marriage Preparation Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Washington and as a consultant to the U.S. Bishops Committee on Marriage and Family Life. He co-authored a book chapter on Preventive Interventions for Couples. Bill is a 1968 graduate of Fairfield University in CT and has two mater’s degrees - Human Relations and Counseling. Bill and his wife Pat have been married for 42 years. They have four children and six grandchildren.

Ilia Delio, OSF Ilia Delio, OSF: is a Senior Fellow at Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University where she concentrates in the area of Science and Religion. Prior to Woodstock she was Professor and Chair of Spirituality Studies at Washington Theological Union where she taught in the areas of general spirituality, Franciscan theology and Science and Religion. Her new books include The Emergent Christ: Exploring the Meaning of Catholic in an Evolutionary Universe (Orbis Books) and Compassion: Living in the Spirit of Saint Francis (St. Anthony Messenger Press).  
Tandy Edward (Ted) Dix

Ted Dix received his undergraduate degree in organ performance at Towson University in Towson, Maryland, where he was a second prize winner in the Peggy Friedmann Gordon Music Competition and a student of Dr. Thomas Spacht. His graduate study was conducted at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, where he was a student of Eugene Roan and a winner in the Graduate Organ Competition. He was awarded the Master of Music in Music Theory Pedagogy degree in May, 2006, at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.

In March of 2001, Mr. Dix was a finalist in the national Arthur Poister Scholarship Competition in Syracuse, New York. In March of 2006, he was inducted into membership of the Epsilon Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda.

Ted currently resides in Westminster, Maryland, with his wife, Gretchen, where he is the Organist and Director of Traditional Music and Music Ministry Development at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and teaches courses in Music Appreciation, Aural Musicianship, Music Theory, and private organ study at Carroll Community and McDaniel Colleges. He is also the accompanist of the Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County and is a member of a concert artists cooperative called East West Organists (www.eastwestorganists.com).

 
Sr. Sara Dwyer, A.S.C. Sara Dwyer, A.S.C., is a member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, United States Region. She is Associate Director on the Paulist Fathers Formation Team. Sara facilitates workshops and retreats on spirituality and theology for adults. She facilitates sessions on Catholic Social Teachings for Notre Dame University's S.T.E.P. program and teaches in the Education+Parish+Service Program in Washington, D.C. Sara served six years on her Congregation's leadership team and was selected as Chair of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Region 10. In that capacity, Sara was a member of the National Board of LCWR. She has Master degrees in Theology from St Mary's University, San Antonio, TX and Education from Boston College.  
Susan & Philip Esserwein Susan & Philip Esserwein: Sue Esserwein is an educator with an M.A. in music from St. Joseph College in Indiana. She has worked in music ministry in the archdioceses of Phoenix, Arizona and Baltimore, Maryland. Currently Sue is at Mt. St. Joseph High School. Phil Esserwein is an educator in music, working on a master's degree from Goucher College. He has worked in music ministry in the Baltimore archdiocese. Currently he teaches at St. Paul elementary and middle school.  
Michael Fonseca Currently is the director of Spiritual Formation for the diocese of Gaylord, Michigan. He is a licensed professional counselor and an experienced spiritual director and retreat leader. Jim Forest

Jim Forest: Jim Forest is a founder of the Catholic Peace Fellowship and former General Secretary of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation. He was a close personal friend of Merton; beginning in 1961, when Jim, after leaving the US Navy, joined the Catholic Worker community in New York City.

In addition to visits at the monastery, the two corresponded frequently until the time of Merton's death in December 1968. The last book by Merton published before his death, "Faith and Violence," was dedicated to Jim. Among the many books Jim has written is "Living with Wisdom: A Life of Thomas Merton." He is also the author of "Praying with Icons."

Robert Hitz Robert Hitz has over 20 years of experience teaching and leading groups in the processes of creativity, spirituality and imagination. Using creativity, music and fun Robert leads people to their own creative process, encouraging innovation and personal exploration. He is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory-Johns Hopkins Univ., and Syracuse University. Recent projects include a music/video project with noted photographer Monte Nagler for the Henry Ford Hospital and healthcare industry.  
Paula Jilanis Paula Jilanis has been a body worker for 20 years. She has completed undergraduate training and worked in the fields of psychology and theology. Her educational credentials include a master's degree in Applied Healing Arts from the Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland. For the past nine years, Paula has been the Director of the Therapeutic Massage Program at Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland. Rev. Joseph P. Lacey, S.J. Rev. Joseph P. Lacey, S.J.: A Philadelphia , PA native, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate in 1958. He has spent over 20 years working in India as a teacher, Administrator, Retreat Director, and Pastoral Counseling. He has been leading Ignatian retreats since 1971. Currently he is the Pastor at St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, where he has been since 1999.  
Brother Michael Laratonda, FMS Brother Michael Laratonda, FMS: Michael is a member of the Marist Brothers, a teaching order dedicated to "making Jesus known & loved". His ministries have included secondary school education, guidance and personal counseling, hospital chaplaincy, and chaplain to the elderly. Since 1991 he has been co-director of Wellsprings, originally a renewal/sabbatical program located in Glens Falls, NY. His areas of interest are journaling, dreams and the inner life, psycho-spiritual development, sexuality and spirituality, and God's calls to transformation in our lives.  
Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella has been involved with Art all of her professional life. Deborah Maffie Deborah Maffie has been working in the fitness industry for over 20 years and is certified by the American Council on Exercise as a Group Exercise Instructor and Personal Trainer. She specializes in teaching multi-level classes that are suitable for participants of all ages, exercise experience and fitness levels, and has designed programs in a variety of settings, including private industry, government and non-profit organizations. ZUMBA is her favorite group exercise format; she has been teaching ZUMBA for over a year at several locations in Maryland. Peggy Tabor Millin Peggy Tabor Millin has led spiritual growth and writing workshops for women for 25 years. She teaches Centered Writing Practice™, a technique that emphasizes the inherent connection of the body to the act of creativity. She holds a master's in the psychoneurology of language and learning and authored two nonfiction books, along with articles, short stories, and poems. Her book Women, Writing, and Soul-Making: Creativity and the Sacred Feminine won the 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the spirituality category. In addition to her Fearless Women's Writing Retreats, she teaches writing for the Eastern Band of Cherokee and the University of North Carolina . Her students describe her workshops as safe, nurturing, and inspiring.  
Patricia Montley Patricia Montley has an M.A. in theology from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Theatre Arts from the University of Minnesota. She has written several op-ed pieces on seasonal rituals for the Baltimore Sun, and her book In Nature's Honor: Myths and Rituals Celebrating the Earth was published by Skinner House in 2005. Her poetry has been published in The Lyric, America, The Classical Outlook, The English Journal, the Boston Review of the Arts, and The National Catholic Reporter. Dr. Montley has taught at Towson University, UMBC, Goucher College, and Johns Hopkins (Odyssey Program), and for seventeen years chaired the Theatre Department at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, where she directed some 40 productions and also taught classes in myth and ritual. She conducts the annual Winter Solstice Ritual at the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore.

Fr. Joe Muth Fr. Joe Muth – Has been a priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore for 35 years. Currently he is the pastor of St. Mathews with a membership of people from over 42 different countries. He has traveled to Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Israel, Ireland, and New Zealand. This year he has served on the Governor’s council for new Americans and the Archdiocesan Immigration Coalition.  
Fr. Gene Nickol Ordained in 1973, Fr. Gene has been Pastor of Our Lady of the Fields for the past 8 years. He is an alumnus of Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary and has been speaking to the Friends group of Bon Secours Spiritual Center for many years.  
Ginny Niemeyer A wife, mother, and grandmother and for many years a spiritual companion for others. She is now on staff with Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation.  
Virginia Novak An experienced Spiritual Director /prayer companion having served as an adjunct retreat director at Loyola House Retreat Center in Guelph, Ontario, and for many years at Loyola Retreat Center in Faulkner, Maryland. A wife, mother, and grandmother; her ministry often includes music and song prayer.  
Fr. Frank O'Connor, S.J. Has extensive experience directing Ignatian retreats. He has spent many years at Loyola Jesuit College and the Jesuit Centre in Nigeria. Having lived and worked with Jesuit novices in the Maryland and New York provinces at the Syracuse novitiate as well as in the Nigeria-Ghana region (now part of the new Africa Atlantic province), he is hopeful about the Society of Jesus in those places. He is currently in residence at St. Ignatius Parish in Baltimore, MD.  
Diarmuid O'Murchu MSC A member of the Sacred Heart Missionary Order, and a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin Ireland , is a social psychologist whose entire working life has been in social ministry. In that capacity he has worked as a couple's counselor, in bereavement work, AIDS-HIV counseling and laterally with homeless people and refugees. As a workshop leader and group facilitator he has worked in Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, The Philippines, Thailand, India, Peru and in several African countries, facilitating programs on Adult Faith Development. His best known books include Quantum Theology (1996 - revised in 2004), Reclaiming Spirituality (1998), Evolutionary Faith (2002), Catching Up with Jesus (2005), The Transformation of Desire (2007), Ancestral Grace (2008).  
David Orr A career senior executive with the U.S. Government, whose avocation is poetry. He considers poetry to be prayer, where God draws near to hearts, listens to us, shares in our deepest feelings, and responds to us. In his view, poetry maps the poet's spiritual journey toward truth, and spiritual journeys are to be shared, as they show others our own ways to God. Herm Trabbic Herm Trabbic earned a Master’s in Theology from Washington Theological Union after retiring from management consulting focused on organizational and individual effectiveness. After four years as a chaplain at an assisted living facility and a chaplaincy internship at John Hopkins Hospital, he is a chaplain at Howard County General Hospital.  
Rev. Stephen Wade Rev. Stephen Wade: Is an Episcopal Priest and retired Rector of Immanuel Church on the Hill in Alexandria, Virginia. He received his training in Spiritual Direction at the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts and at Loyola House in Guelph, Ontario. He has served as a guest retreat director at the Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, Massachusetts.  
Stefan Waligur Stefan Andre Waligur is a contemplative, musician/composer, retreat leader and leader of new chant and kirtan around the world. He has served as Liturgical Musician for the ecumenical Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC, as chaplain at American University, adjunct faculty at Memphis Theological Seminary and Music Director at Theological College in Washington, D.C. Classically trained at New England Conservatory his music has been performed by the Chamber Brass of Boston, the Artaria String Quartet, and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. After a life-changing visit to the Taize community in France he began to write music in a similar style. Similar to Taize chants, these new chants incorporate American rhythms and harmonies, Celtic melodies and the call and response style of Indian raga. In addition, he has been engaged as a teacher of English chant by the Buddhist community Plum Village, which was founded by Thich Nhat Hahn and is located in the south of France. For the past ten years, he has traveled extensively while sharing his music in Europe, the United States, Israel/Palestine and India. On the second Friday of each month he leads an evening of chant and song at the Washington National Cathedral. Meditative Singing
