30 Day Spiritual Exercises
of St Ignatius Loyola, Directed Retreat

An Ignatian Retreat is an intense, structured program based on The Spiritual Exercises of the great saint of the Church, St. Ignatius of Loyola. During these past 400 years, hundreds of thousands of retreatants have been richly blessed by following what the Lord showed to St. Ignatius in prayer. The retreatant meets daily with a director who suggests particular Scriptures relating to themes, such as God's love, mercy, call to serve. The retreatant spends three to four prayer sessions each day meditating on these Scriptures and praying for the related graces.

Bon Secours Spiritual Center Announces a 30-Day Ignatian Retreat in July 2010

In military parlance, a "retreat" signifies the decision to withdraw from an engagement to regroup and prepare to re-engage the foe. This theme repeats in the spiritual realm as well, where we use "retreat" to mean a time of removing yourself from daily concerns and questions and giving yourself the time and permission to go deeper, focusing more clearly on the divine agenda in your life. Directed Week Retreat

A summer Directed Retreat at Bon Secours Spiritual Center consists of six days during which a person meets with a spiritual director daily (or less if the person wishes) to reflect on God’s presence and movement in one's life as revealed in prayer, the events and relationships in one's life, and the response to God that is being made by the retreatant. The director may make suggestions (prayer forms, Scripture, or reading materials) to support and deepen the person’s awareness of and response to God. This is a silent retreat.

Quest for the Living God

We are living in a time of amazing personal, spiritual and theological development. In this evening program, we will follow the path set out in "Quest for the Living God: Mapping Frontiers in the Theology of God", by Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ, ask, "Who is God?" and "How does God relate to us and to our world?" We often ask the same Quest for the Living Godquestions ourselves, and often don't come to the clarity of insight and understanding we desire. These sessions will provide an opportunity to explore together the journey we share in our "quest for the living God."

Our sessions will use content from Quest for the Living God as a framework to contemplate the meaning and truths unfolding in our lives. There will be a blend of presentation; personal prayer and communal reflection; the option for small group faith-sharing and creative activities as well as journal sheets to guide individual reflection.

Care for the Care Giver: Join us for a Time of Respite

Come away awhile, let us care for you! If you are a caregiver, often you are considered the pillar of strength in your particular situation. We understand the cost of that strength and the burdens of putting yourself at the service of another: the lack of personal time, and the lost energy for other roles.

Contemplative Prayer - Going Deeper

In Christian contemplative tradition, the process of spiritual deepening - growth in love - happens through grace. This deepening comes as a gift and it happens in often hidden ways that are uniquely fitted for each person. The first and most important way of exploring your spiritual life is to sincerely attend to your own prayer. Although each person will follow her or his own unique path of practice, all contemplative journeys are likely to include some aspects of silence, solitude, and community. Silence implies freedom from all noise, not only the noise of speaking but also that of thinking, worrying and busy, driven activity. Solitude, like silence, is the freedom from the host of habitual restraints and compulsions of social interaction that burden us. We need community to support and encourage us in our spiritual practices, to receive their perspective, wisdom, and sometimes, their challenges to recognize and deepen God's presence in and around us. This retreat will make use of the wisdom of our saints and mystics to give us this support and perspective that we so urgently need in our lives, saints like Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, the English mystics, Brother Lawrence, de Caussade, etc. Hopefully, a profound union with God, desired by God for you, will become a powerful and ever-present longing in your life.

Ignatian 8 Day Directed Retreat

Experiencing the call of God's love, St. Ignatius of Loyola was impassioned to live his life in radical conformity to the mind and heart of Christ. Led to guide others in responding to this same call, he left a written record, The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, for those who would carry on this ministry. In an atmosphere of silence, and with the assistance of a director, this eight day retreat offers sacred space for an extended prayer experience based on The Spiritual Exercises. Prior experience with an extended period of silence and solitude is recommended. Bring a Bible and a notebook/journal

Opening Our Emotions to God
Through Contemplation

So often we find ourselves at the effect of our emotions. Jesus calls us to be transformed as whole persons, including our emotions, by being in God's presence. Through specific practices, we can open ourselves to the gift of contemplation wherein our emotions are accepted and integrated into our life in God rather denied or repressed. The energy of those emotions can then shift from a deficient/destructive self-image to an expansive one that exists in God

Meeting with Jesus, the Psychotherapist

In this retreat, we welcome Jesus to be our therapist and healer, as we look at the messiness of our inner lives. Too often, our feelings of inadequacy, guilt, anger, and fear, as well as our incessant need to be perfect, sets us up for a life of harsh judgments, anxious control, and small minded thinking. Guided by our compassionate, wise therapist, Jesus, we will seek a spirit-filled gospel way to understand and embrace what is happening. Through Jesus’ healing love, we open to the gift of inner freedom that leads to a life of more authentic joy, amazing beauty and sacred self-esteem.

This retreat is guided by Eileen Quinn, a Sister of Saint Francis of Assisi. She has a rich educational background in spirituality and psychology and is currently Director of Aisling Retreat House in Manchester, Maryland.  Sister Eileen brings a joyous spirit and a contemplative heart in helping others integrate the human and divine within themselves. As a psychotherapist and spiritual director, she has been inspired by the teachings of the mystics and has a graced ability to call forth the mystic within each of us.
