Franciscan Day of Prayer
Clare of Assisi and the Mirror of the Cross

The answer to all our pain, struggle, and weakness can be found by gazing into the mirror of the Cross. It is an inexhaustible refection, an endless book to read, a song of beauty to sing, and a mirror in which to truly see ourselves.

St. Clare (whose name means name means clear, unshadowed light) wrote in her fourth letter to St. Agnes of Prague: "Gaze upon this mirror each day and continually study your face within it".

It is a mirror that enables us to see more deeply the value of our existence and more clearly the place of suffering within it. Above all, it will enable us to love Jesus Christ more.

In this program, we will search for our true identity in the mirror of the Cross. Through a combination of talks and prayers; quiet times and group sharing, we will follow St. Clare and reflect on Christ and his crucifixion in order to see our own strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly, our capacity to love.

Reconciling the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the 21st Century

This retreat is an opportunity to explore the sacrament of Reconciliation more deeply. We will look at how Reconciliation is important in our own lives and examine the changes that have been made to the rite since Vatican II. Additionally, we will spend time looking at different aspects of sin – original, corporate, social, etc as well as spend some time meditating on our own personal need for reconciliation. There will be time for a communal celebration of the sacrament including opportunities for confession or spiritual direction, and a reflection upon the experience of the rite.

The Catholic Church In China Today:
Understanding Relationships of Prayer, Teaching, & Business

The reality of the Roman Catholic Church in China remains complex and is still evolving. Although the Church in China enjoys greater religious freedom today than in the past, it is not an exaggeration to say that everything you hear about the Church in China is true at some time and in some place; and not true at another time and place.Today, in the midst of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rapid pace of change in China , the religious faith of the Chinese people is alive and slowly growing.

Father Rob Carbonneau, C.P., Ph.D. taught at Sichuan International Studies University in Chongqing , China . He has met local Chinese Catholic Church leaders, as well as students, teachers and Chinese Catholics from many walks of life. His day to day contact with them has given him a sincere appreciation of China as a nation that respects traditions, but seeks new options for development. He has published numerous articles on American Catholic missionary history and its present day implications for world Catholicism.

In this workshop, we will discuss the successes, struggles, and lessons learned from the American Catholic Church’s outreach to China and discuss the Church’s future there. We will consider the Catholic Church’s new relationship of understanding with China and how we can pray in union with the Chinese Catholic Church. And finally, we discuss how to pray, learn and develop a business relationship with China in a gospel context.

Contemplation:
A Loving Presence To What Is

Is it difficult to find God in your everyday life or in the world saturated with violence, noise and impasse? Contemplation “is the loving gaze that finds God everywhere...” (Brother Lawrence). It helps us to listen with the ears of our heart and to discover anew the presence who is already with us and in us.
