60-Plus Retreatants Join Author Jim Forest to Learn of Thomas Merton's Walk in Faith with Icons
Bon Secours Spiritual Center sponsored a unique opportunity for devotees of Thomas Merton Saturday October 10th when Jim Forest, Friend of Thomas Merton and coordinator of the Orthodox Peace Fellowship guided us through a tour de force of Merton's conversion and prayer discipline and how he employed sacred Icons in the process. Attached are pictures of the day and three URLs promised to participants and available at the authors' kindness, for your use to review some of the art and Icons highlighted during the presentation. Autographed copies of Jim's books are still available at Bon Secours Book Store. Jim has agreed to return in the fall of 2010 for a full weekend retreat. Watch this site for more information on dates and more details. We are grateful to Jim Forest for his partnership with Bon Secours Spiritual Center in honoring and advancing the memory and spiritual legacy of Thomas Merton. Celebrates
Earth Day Wednesday, April 22, 2009 |
||||||||||||
Bon Secours Sisters and coworkers from the Spiritual Center, Provincial Ministries and Health Care Offices gathered on Wednesday April 22 to commemorate Earth Day and to celebrate and reconfirm our common value of stewardship. Sr Alice Talone, CBS, president of the Sisters in the United States, blessed a tree newly planted by those in attendance to signify our commitment to be good stewards of God's creation and to recognize that our behaviors make a difference in sustaining and sharing God's abundance with others. Bon Secours Health System Chair, Sr Pat Eck, CBS, read a proclamation that reminded us ".of the God-given right of each person to the use of our global home and at the same time, the equal responsibility of each person to preserve and improve the quality of life on Earth." And further announced a joint commitment by all of the Bon Secours ministries to honor our responsibilities in faith by embracing ecological stewardship, focused on recycling, further reducing our carbon "footprint, and promoting eco-friendly initiatives." The Spiritual Center Staff joins all of the Bon Secours Family in promoting a work and life style that will help us all be better stewards of the gift of God's creation. Watch our website for news and ideas on how you do and can participate in this commitment when you join us at Bon Secours and at home. |

Thank you to all of our friends who have prayed and supported us in so many ways in the two years of construction that resulted in the magnificent chapel renovation and organ restoration at the Bon Secours Provincial House. We of the Spiritual Center Staff know that only the power of God and the care that each of you have for this sacred place could enable us to draw together the financial, artistic and engineering resources and expertise to realize our dream that this story and these pictures tell. Praise God for you and for all of God's blessings on this house and the people who grow in it.Be Good help to someone in God's name today and thank you for the Good Help you have been to us. Easter Greetings From the Executive Director

Bon Secours Spiritual Center
Easter, 2009
Dear Friends of Bon Secours Spiritual Center.
I have been praying during the Triduum this year with the Icon of the Descent of the Lord into Hell. It was prayed in the late 13th or early 14th century and depicts the Lord in glorious bright garments descending into the darkness, and breaking down the gates of Hell which lie shattered in the shape of an X at his feet.
In His left hand, Christ holds a resplendent Cross, His victory symbol. With His right hand the Christ figure is literally yanking our forefather Adam out of an opening grave. The energy is such that Christ's garment blows upward in the wind being created in the movement. A figure of Eve awaits the same reclamation as she stretches her arms out to the Lord. Behind them and a little higher are other saints already claimed by the Risen One. In the dark cave of Hell,"the locks of death", the bars and chains are seen as if shattered by the power of the Resurrection. It is an engaging icon that has captivated my prayer and thought these days.
As Thomas Aquinas reflected, how can we deserve such a savior and such a victory? Of course we know the answer is, we cannot. Even more reason to rejoice this Easter, to know that Jesus has indeed broken our bonds. As the Sisters' charism instructs us, liberating us from all that holds us down and, with the energy of new life He draws us to Him. What a Great God, who loves us into life so completely. What a great day to celebrate and thank God!
During these days of the Triduum retreat, the Sisters and I have prayed for you. And I trust that you are experiencing this Easter, the power of Jesus liberating you from the dark places in your life and calling you to resurrected, liberated life that will not end.
We had a powerful Triduum retreat with Fr. Joachim Giermek these few days. He reminded us that God continues to call us to new life in all the ways we meet (and even when we do not recognize) God in our lives. I trust this Easter you hear and heed that message and that you know the Power of God bursting in you!
When you can, come by, see us, and tell us your Resurrection tales. Even better, next year, come and be with us for The Triduum retreat during Holy Week and Easter. But wherever you are today, sing out loud and tell everyone you meet. "O death, where is your sting? O forces of Hell, where is your victory?" It is all new now. Christ is Risen! To Him be Glory and Power and to us, new life, forever and ever. Amen! Alleluia!
Happy Easter!
