John’s Gospel is quite different in character from the three synoptic gospels. John focuses our attention on the special relationship between Jesus and God. Jesus is more than a great human being or religious leader. Jesus is our revelation of God. Jesus is God. In the narrative Jesus appears as the unique Son of the Father. Only the Son can reveal the Father. Father and Son are united by a common love and the Son’s obedience to everything the Father requires. Salvation, which John usually describes as eternal life, requires belief in Jesus as God’s Son. This relationship is open to anyone to whom God has given the grace to believe in Jesus. Jesus chose to offer his life for others so that they could see God’s love revealed on the cross. Christians always have the example of Jesus’ love to follow. They also have the experience of the Father and Son dwelling in community to inspire their efforts to achieve unity.
The conferences for this retreat will be a combination of presentation and prayer exercises. The reflections and exercises will bring out the richness and depth of John’s ponderings on the life of Jesus (with God and with us), on what it means for us to be witnesses, and how Jesus cannot be known outside the experience of community with other disciples. Connections will be made with John’s three letters as well as with the Book of Revelation.

The early Celts called it “The Great Round” - the earth’s circling the sun year after year. We speak of the four seasons, each bringing changes, challenges, beauty and constancy. In this quarterly series, we will explore the gifts and opportunities of each season, how each affects the inner spirit and how each leads us to be grounded in gratitude. We will use story, music, art exercises and quiet time to discover the gifts and call to growth present in each season.
Summer is the time for shedding burdens and heavy clothes and a time of warmth,
relaxation and play. What calls to play and relaxation do you hear? (July 19, 2008)

During a directed retreat, a person meets with a spiritual director daily to reflect on God’s presence and movement in one’s life as revealed in prayer and the events and relationships of one’s life, and the response to God that is being made by the retreatant. The director may offer suggestions such as prayer forms, spiritual practices, Scripture, or reading materials to help support and deepen the person’s awareness of, and response to God. Every effort will be made to honor your preference for a director, but we ask that you name an alternate. If no choice is indicated, a director will be chosen for you. The directed retreat is a silent retreat.
